Gauteng, translating to the 'Place of Gold', is the largest industrial region in South Africa. This cosmopolitan, multicultural province is home to two of Africa's greatest cities including Pretoria, the South African capital city and Johannesburg, the country's financial headquarters.
Johannesburg is a vibrant, exciting metropolis and the provincial capital of Gauteng. The city offers visitors a wide selection of recreational, historical and cultural attractions, not to mention the numerous business attractions in this commerce-oriented city.
Pretoria, situated about 50 km north of Johannesburg is renowned for its colourful gardens, shrubs and trees. It is particularly beautiful in spring when the jacarandas provide a fantastic mauve display.
Sandton, one of the most upmarket areas in South Africa, is in the northern part of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Area. It has fast become the home of the South Africa's "new money". The JSE moved there in the 1990s and Sandton City is one of the largest shopping centres in Africa.
