Status Levels and Status Points
1. How many status levels are in the Southern Sun Rewards programme and what are the requirements for each status level?
The programme has three status levels
- Gold: Entry level
- Platinum: 3,000 Status Points required in a rolling 12-month period
- Black: 9,000 Status Points required in a rolling 12-month period
2. What are Status Points and how are they accumulated?
Your status is no longer determined by the number of nights you stay with us but by the amount of Status Points you accumulate. You accumulate 1 Status Point for every R10 spent on public and corporate accommodation rates, food and beverage at hotel owned restaurants and sundry items (hotel-owned laundry services, telephone calls and hotel-owned parking). Status Points are calculated over a rolling 12-month period.
3. How can I upgrade to another status level of the Southern Sun Rewards programme?
Higher statuses are awarded to you based on the number of status points you have accumulated over a rolling 12-month period which is now based on your spend and no longer nights. You accumulate 1 Status Point for every R10 spent on public and corporate rates and other qualifying spend when staying at a participating Southern Sun hotels.
- Gold: Entry level
- Platinum: 3,000 Status Points required in a rolling 12-month period
- Black: 9,000 Status Points required in a rolling 12-month period
You will automatically be upgraded upon reaching the required Status Points for an upgrade. Platinum and Black member status is valid for 1 year from date of issue. If you do not maintain or meet the required Status Points to maintain your status you will be placed on a lower status level in line with your Status Points accumulated.
Membership
1. I have just enrolled as a Southern Sun Rewards member, when can I start using my benefits?
Newly registered members will receive their accommodation discount on their first stay as well as food and beverage discounts. Members only need their membership number and PIN to qualify for their discounts.
2. Does my membership number change when my status changes?
No, your membership number does not change, even when your status is upgraded.
3. Why do I need a PIN, and when do I use it?
Your confidential PIN protects you from fraudulent use of your SunRands. You will receive an activation email once you have registered which will direct you to the website where you will be required to select your four-digit PIN. The PIN is also required along with your membership number when logging in on southernsun.com to access your Southern Sun Rewards programme account. You may also change your PIN online under “My Details” within southernsun.com.
1. What are SunRands?
SunRands are Southern Sun's Rewards programme currency that you earn and that in turn can be used towards free holidays as well as for meals and drinks at any Southern Sun owned restaurant or bar, Hotel Parking – when staying at a hotel and Tourism levy.
2. How do I earn SunRands?
You earn SunRands when you stay at a participating Southern Sun hotel on public and corporate accommodation rates. Confidential rates do not qualify for SunRands earnings (example – Discovery Vitality) SunRands can also be earned on food and beverage spend at Southern Sun owned restaurants/bars and sundry items (hotel owned laundry, telephone calls and hotel owned parking) provided you charge the bill back to your room. You can earn SunRands on a maximum of 4 rooms, per member, per stay. You must be occupying one of the rooms to qualify for SunRands earning. SunRands earning is calculated based on your status level:
- Gold: 5%
- Platinum:10%
- Black: 15%
3. How many rooms qualify for SunRands earnings?
frequentGuest individual members may earn SunRands on a maximum of 4 rooms per member, per stay, providing they are staying and occupying one of the rooms.
4. How long are SunRands valid for?
SunRands are valid for 24 months from date of issue. SunRands not used within the 24 months will expire irrespective of your status level.
5. How do I know how many SunRands I have?

6. Can SunRands and benefits be used for a friend?
No, SunRands are not transferable. You can redeem and earn SunRands for yourself and your immediate family (i.e. your spouse and children). You must be present to earn and redeem. You can now earn on 4 rooms, per stay.
7. How long will it take for SunRands earned to reflect on my account?
SunRands earned will be allocated to you 24 hours after check out and will appear on your statement. Should your stay not be allocated within 24 hours after check out you can log a missing stay online by logging in with your membership number and PIN.
Redeeming SunRands
1. How many SunRands do I need before I can spend them?
For redemption purposes, one SunRand = one Rand. You do not need a minimum amount to redeem.
2. When and where can I redeem my SunRands?
You can redeem SunRands any day of week at all participating Southern Sun hotels or Southern Sun owned restaurant/bars. Hotel Parking – when staying at a hotel and Tourism levy. Sandton Sun Spa treatments, Mount Grace Spa treatments and Arabella Spa treatments.
3. Can I redeem SunRands earned on my current stay during my stay?
No, SunRands will only appear on your profile 24 hours after check out and can only be used once reflected on your profile as an available SunRands balance.
4. Do I earn SunRands on SunRand redemption transactions?
You can earn SunRands only on the top up value of your stay should you be required to pay in an amount. You will not earn SunRands on the redeemed accommodation and food & beverage portion of your bill paid.
5. How do I make a SunRand redemption booking?
Book online, or contact the Southern Sun Customer Contact Centre.
6. Can I use my SunRands to pay for food and beverage, Hotel Parking and Tourism Levy?
Yes, you can pay for meals and drinks with SunRands at Southern Sun owned restaurants and bars as well as Hotel Parking when staying at a hotel and Tourism levy.

3. Do I qualify for further discounts on accommodation if I am booked on a negotiated corporate rate?
You are not given a discount if you are booked on a negotiated corporate rate.

3. Can I give my membership number to a family member or friend to get discounts?
You are required to be present at the restaurant or bar to qualify for your discount and will be required to produce your membership number.
4. Is there a limit on the number of guests the discount applies to?
Yes, your discount applies to a maximum of 8 guests, per sitting.
5. Do I get discounts on room service and banqueting at Southern Sun?
No, discounts exclude room service and banqueting.
6. Do I qualify for discounts on food and beverages if my company is settling the account?
No, discounts are not granted on bills to corporates, travel agents or government departments.

1. A hotel stay has not been recorded on my SunRands summary. How do I query a missing stay?
You can claim a missing stay online. You may also query it at the Rewards My Account area at the hotel or call the Southern Sun Customer Contact Centre on 0861 44 77 44 or email ContactUs@southernsun.com.
2. I have forgotten my PIN Number?
You can use the “forgot PIN number” online which can be found on the login area on the Southern Sun page. Our hotels and the Customer Contact Centre are not able to assist you with PIN requests as your PIN is confidential.
3. I would like to get a statement of SunRands summary?
You can login online to view or email SunRands statements to your email address, which can be found under View SunRands Statement area under “Statements”. You can also call the Southern Sun Customer Contact Centre on 0861 44 77 44 or email ContactUs@southernsun.com who will then log a request on your behalf for a statement to be emailed to you.
What you need to know
What will be required on check-in?
The safety of our guests and staff is of paramount importance, we continuously encourage social distancing and good hygiene practice while taking guidance from the NICD. To protect our guests and staff and to prevent a potentially high risk person from checking into the hotel, guests are required to be screened on arrival using a thermal scanner. If a guest’s temperature falls within the normal range and they do not show any COVID-19 symptoms they will be required to sanitise their hands and proceed to check-in. The guest will then be required to present a photo ID and complete and sign a Covid questionnaire. If a guest’s temperature is high (the actual temperature at screening should not exceed 37.5 degrees Celsius) and/or they have symptoms of the virus they will be not be allowed to check-in.
What is the approved temperature on the thermal scanning device?
If a guest’s temperature falls within the normal range and they do not show any symptoms they will be required to sanitise their hands and proceed to check-in. If a guest’s temperature is high (the actual temperature at screening should not exceed 37.5 degrees Celsius) and/or they have symptoms of the virus they will be not be allowed to check-in.
How will surfaces and equipment be monitored for hygiene?
Tsogo Sun Hotels is committed to maintaining professional hygiene standards and provides continuous training for housekeeping staff to ensure that the group maintains a high standard of cleanliness.
What is the frequency of santising surfaces and common areas?
Tsogo Sun Hotels housekeeping departments already use chemicals that contain SABS approved disinfectants. Additional frequencies of sanitising of high traffic and high touch point areas have been implemented.
Hotels have a detailed list of “touchpoints” that are touched frequently by guests and employees. High strength disinfectant and microfiber cloths or disposable towels are used to cleanse all touchpoints as per the detailed schedule.
Are extra precautions being taken when preparing food?
Yes, we are, Tsogo Sun Hotels kitchens have always made use of sanitisers and disinfectants that are effective and increased frequency of sanitising has been implemented.
What protective measures are in place to prevent the spread of the disease in kitchens and communal areas?

Tsogo Sun Hotels has conducted quarterly kitchen hygiene audits for many years that evaluate the cleaning and hygiene standards and adherence to the Department of Health requirements and international benchmarks. All food products are sourced from accredited and reputable suppliers to ensure food safety is maintained at the highest levels.
How will you ensure that staff are safe from contracting COVID-19?

Sunswop Frequently Asked Questions
How do I deposit my week with Sunswop?
Simply contact the Sunswop call centre and ask them to deposit your week. Remember that your levy will become payable when you deposit the week if its commencement date is more than 90 days away.
Am I able to deposit only a portion of my week at my home resort?
Am I able to deposit only a portion of my week at my home resort (e.g. a weekend or midweek) with Sunswop if I wish to occupy the other portion?
Yes, you can deposit a portion of the week that you will not be occupying. For example, if you wish to occupy the weekend portion of your week at, say, Drakensberg Sun, you would be able to deposit the remaining midweek portion with Sunswop and receive the relevant trading points for this midweek.
This needs to be deposited in advance to receive applicable points according to the Sunswop Trading Points table in this directory. Note that weeks are split into weekends and midweeks according to what resorts allow. Thus, Fri check-in resorts have a three-night weekend (Fri, Sat and Sun) and a four-night midweek (Mon, Tues, Wed and Thurs). Sat check-in resorts have a two-night weekend (Sat and Sun) and a five-night midweek (Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Fri). Peak weeks cannot be split and need to be deposited in their entirety.
What is the lifespan of my deposited weeks?
Your deposited weeks are valid for the year of occupation and two additional calendar years. For example, a deposited week with 2021 occupation would be valid for exchange redemption until the end of 2023 (the accommodation being exchanged into needs to fall within this period).
Due to Covid-19 and the resultant national lockdown which necessitated the closure of all resorts, points which would have expired at the end of 2020 and 2021, have been extended by an additional 2 years. Sunswop Choices members receive an additional year on the lifespan of deposited weeks.
Can I cancel the deposit of my week?
No, you can’t. By depositing your week with Sunswop you have relinquished the right to occupy it, and that week may be assigned to another member prior to the submission or fulfilment of an exchange request made by you.
How long before the check-in day can I deposit my week?
You can deposit your week with Sunswop up to two months (60 days) prior to occupation without incurring any penalty. Should you deposit your week within 60 days of occupancy, you will lose a percentage of your Sunswop trading points.
Will I receive extra points for banking my week early?
Yes. All weeks deposited up to 120 days prior to the start date of that week will receive 10% extra trading points against that deposited week.
Points percentages received for depositing are as follows:
- Up to 120 days prior to occupation: 110%
- 119 – 60 days prior to occupation: 100%
- 59 – 40 days prior to occupation: 80%
- 39 – 20 days prior to occupation: 60%
- 19 days or less: 0%
What are SunSwop Trading Points?
Sunswop Trading Points are the currency you receive when depositing your week with Sunswop. The number of points you receive is based on various factors – for example, the resort at which you own, the size of your unit, the unit’s amenities, the season in which you own, the facilities offered at your home resort, and so on.
How do I go about requesting a domestic exchange?
Once you have deposited your week with Sunswop, we recommend that you select a minimum of three resort destinations, as well as three different dates, to increase the likelihood of securing your accommodation request. We also recommend that you request your exchange holiday as far in advance as possible to ensure that we are able to secure the accommodation you want.
Can I request multiple exchanges in the same year?
Yes. As long as you have enough Sunswop Trading Points deposited on your membership file, you can request multiple exchanges in the same year.
Can I request multiple units in the same resort?
Yes. If you have enough Sunswop Trading Points deposited on your membership file, you can request multiple units in the same resort.
Can I reserve consecutive weeks at the same resort?
Yes. As long as you have enough Sunswop Trading Points deposited on your membership file, you can request consecutive weeks in the same resort.
Can I do Midweek and Weekend Exchanges?
Yes. If the resort into which you wish to exchange allows split week exchanges, you will be able to request either midweek or weekend accommodation. The Sunswop Trading Value Guide in this directory will highlight whether or not resorts allow split week exchanges.
Can I give my confirmed reservation to a friend or family member?
Yes, you can. Simply request a Guest Certificate from Sunswop (R62 per Guest Certificate) in the name of the relevant person. It is important that the arriving guest matches the name on the resort’s reservation system. The resort reserves the right to turn guests away if the name on the confirmation letter or guest certificate does not match the name on the reservation system.
When do I pay the exchange fee for my domestic exchange?
You pay the relevant fee for domestic exchanges upon confirmation of your reservation.
Can I exchange into peak time if I do not own a peak week?
Yes, you can. As long as you have the required number of points for the desired exchange, you can exchange into a peak week.
Can I do a split week exchange in peak times?
No. Exchanges into peak times can only be done in seven-day intervals.
Can I rent out my confirmed exchange or Bonus Week?
No. You may not rent out confirmed exchanges or Bonus Weeks for financial gain. Failing to adhere to this rule could result in the termination of your Sunswop membership.
What exchange fees will I pay when I use Sunswop?
Exchange fees for 2022 are as follows:
- Southern Sun - Resorts timeshare owners exchanging into another Southern Sun Resorts property: R530
- Southern Sun Resorts timeshare owners exchanging into other resorts in South Africa: R805
- La Lucia Sands timeshare owners exchanging into all resorts within South Africa: R805
- Exchanging into an International Resort: R2,171
Can I buy extra points if I don’t have enough points to complete an exchange?
No. You would need to deposit an additional week to ensure that you have sufficient points to complete the exchange.
What happens if I have to cancel my confirmed exchange?
If you need to cancel your confirmed exchange, you will unfortunately forfeit the exchange fee paid, and will be required to pay another exchange fee when you next do an exchange. However, depending on when you cancel the confirmed exchange, you will be entitled to a refund of the Sunswop trading points that were used for the exchange.
The number of points refunded would be determined as follows:
- Exchanges cancelled up to 60 days prior to check-in date: 100%
- 59 – 40 days prior to check-in date: 80%
- 39 – 20 days prior to check-in date: 60%

What guarantee do I have that my Timeshare ownership is secure?
The Share Block Company is run by a Board of Directors elected by shareholders. Directors are bound by the Companies Act and Share Blocks Control Act to report to the shareholders every year. In addition, the company is audited annually by one of the “Big 4” auditing firms. The timeshare programme is managed by one of South Africa’s largest and most experienced hospitality companies, the Southern Sun Group.
What are levies?
Levies are raised to cover the operating costs of your resort and to maintain and protect the assets of shareholders. We spend them on the same day-to-day maintenance & improvement projects that you would undertake to protect the value of your own home.
We build up a replacement reserve (of cash), to ensure that we not only maintain the standards of quality, luxury, amenities, and service but to improve them overall.
Directors approve the levies on an annual basis for each Share Block Company. Shareholders receive a copy of the Annual Financial Statements of the Company each year, which reflects the financial situation of the Company. You must pay your levy once a year for each unit you own, regardless of whether you have deposited your unit for accrual or exchange, placed it in the Resort rental pool or entered into a private arrangement. Your levy statement will be mailed to you five months before the beginning of the period you own, and the amount should be paid three months before occupation.
